Description
Type X U-boat
The German Type XB was a large submarine design developed principally for minelaying. Its size and internal arrangements also made it useful for transport and supply missions, including some long-distance operations. It differed considerably from the smaller Type VII attack boats that dominated the Atlantic campaign. The completed wartime boats were Type XB minelayers, designed to lay mines from specialized vertical storage arrangements and later also employed in long-distance supply and transport work. Its career belongs to Germany’s specialized submarine effort, where mines, cargo, endurance, and support missions could be as important as torpedo attacks. Minelaying required specialized storage and deployment arrangements. This purpose shaped the boat’s design differently from a submarine built principally to carry the maximum practical torpedo armament for patrol attacks.
