Description
U.K. Dreadnought-Class Submarine
Unbuilt proposal.
Britain’s Dreadnought-class ballistic-missile submarines were developed as successors to the Vanguard class. The program is intended to sustain the national strategic deterrent with a new nuclear-powered platform and missile compartment. The successor program reflects the long timescales of strategic-submarine design, construction, training, and support. Continuity of deterrence requires a carefully managed transition from older boats to newer ones. Describing the Dreadnought class therefore calls for distinguishing the planned force and its developing equipment from the operational record already accumulated by the preceding Vanguard class. The program replaces the Vanguard class while retaining Trident missiles. Construction at Barrow-in-Furness continues Britain’s long-established submarine-building industry and strategic nuclear-propulsion expertise.
