UK Type 21-class Frigate

Britain’s Type 21, or Amazon-class, frigates were designed as relatively economical general-purpose escorts. Their compact arrangements and gas-turbine machinery reflected a different approach from larger specialist warships. The Falklands War exposed both the demands placed on such ships and their vulnerability under sustained air attack. Surviving vessels later served Pakistan. Their history is distinct from the later Type 22 and Type 23 frigates, which were developed around different equipment and operational requirements.

Operating far from home placed additional strain on damage control, repairs, and ammunition supply. The class’s Falklands experience demonstrates why wartime assessment must consider the threat environment as well as peacetime design and procurement intentions.
