UK Type 42 Destroyer

Britain’s Type 42 destroyers were developed around the Sea Dart missile system to provide fleet air defense during the Cold War. Their compact hulls, prominent radar equipment, and helicopter facilities reflected a specialized escort role. The class fought in the Falklands War, where both successes and serious losses exposed the difficulties of defending ships against aircraft and missiles close to land. Different construction batches and later modifications produced visible variations across the class. The Sea Dart missile system formed the core of its fleet air-defense role, while a helicopter extended surveillance and anti-submarine capability. The Falklands War exposed the danger of air attack to surface escorts. Different batches varied in dimensions and arrangements as operational experience influenced the development of the class.
