U.S. LAV-25 (Lightly Armored Vehicle

The LAV-25 is an American Marine Corps eight-wheeled reconnaissance vehicle based on a wider family of light armored vehicles. Its turret-mounted 25mm cannon and mobility support scouting and security rather than the role of a heavily protected main battle tank. The chassis also formed the basis for specialized variants, including anti-tank and support vehicles. Its history belongs to the Marine Corps’ effort to provide light armored mobility and reconnaissance across expeditionary operations.

A reconnaissance force must gather and transmit information while retaining the ability to disengage. The LAV’s cannon supplies useful firepower, but that purpose differs from deliberately trading protection and heavy guns with an enemy tank unit.
