Description
U.S. M48 Chaparral SAM System
The M48 Chaparral was an American short-range air-defense system using infrared-guided missiles derived from the Sidewinder family on a tracked carrier. It entered service during the Cold War as part of the protection of ground forces from low-flying aircraft. Its reliance on visual acquisition and heat-seeking engagement differed from radar-guided medium- and long-range missile systems. The tracked carrier allowed the missiles to accompany mobile formations, but infrared guidance still depended on acquiring a suitable target. Aircraft aspect, weather, countermeasures, and operator readiness affected engagement. Chaparral consequently formed one layer of air defense rather than eliminating the need for guns, radar-equipped systems, fighters, and organized warning procedures.
