Description
U.S. Montana-class Aircraft Carrier
The historical American Montana class was a planned battleship design, not an operational aircraft-carrier class. The battleships were canceled before construction. A Montana-class aircraft carrier therefore belongs to an alternate-history interpretation of an unrealized hull concept, rather than a commissioned carrier class.
The planned battleships would have carried twelve 16-inch guns in four triple turrets and emphasized protection and firepower over the high speed of the Iowa class. Wartime priorities shifted toward carriers, escorts, and landing ships, contributing to cancellation in 1943. Combining the Montana name with a flight deck imagines how such a large hull might have been repurposed. However, aircraft arrangements, commissioning dates, and campaigns cannot be inferred from the battleship plans. The speculative carrier consequently has no authentic commissioning, air group, or campaign record.
