USA Arsenal Ship
The American Arsenal Ship was a 1990s concept for a naval vessel carrying a very large battery of missiles. It sought to provide concentrated strike capacity while relying heavily on networking and support from other forces. The program did not produce an operational ship in its proposed form. Its significance lies in debates over distributed sensors, missile capacity, crew size, and the balance between specialized platforms and more versatile surface combatants. The concept envisioned concentrating a large number of missiles aboard a relatively specialized hull supported by other fleet sensors and command systems. Such dependence raised questions about targeting, communications, survivability, and cost. Although no operational vessel resulted from the original program, the idea influenced later discussion of distributed naval strike capacity.
