X-29 Jet Fighter
The Grumman X-29 was an American experimental aircraft used to investigate forward-swept wings, advanced flight controls, and related aerodynamic questions. Its unusual configuration depended on modern materials and computer-controlled stability arrangements. NASA and the military research community used flight testing to gather data rather than to equip an operational fighter squadron.
Advanced composites and computer-controlled flight stabilization made the unusual forward-swept-wing arrangement practical for research. The experimental aircraft supplied aerodynamic and control-system information; it did not become a production fighter squadron type.
Two research aircraft were built, with the first flying on 14 December 1984. Digital fly-by-wire controls stabilized the highly unstable design, while carbon-fiber wing technology helped resist aeroelastic twisting. By April 1990 the program had completed 279 test flights, contributing research to later uses of advanced composites.
