X-47A Pegasus Drone
The Northrop Grumman X-47A Pegasus was an American unmanned-aircraft demonstrator exploring an unconventional tailless layout. Its history concerns experimental design and control of unmanned aircraft, not an operational drone squadron deployed in combat.
Scaled Composites built the airframe for Northrop Grumman, using a compact diamond-like planform rather than a conventional fuselage with a separate tail. The aircraft first flew in 2003. Its purpose was to gather experience in the design and flight control of an unmanned combat-aircraft concept. The later X-47B was substantially larger and undertook the famous carrier launch, recovery, and aerial-refueling demonstrations. Pegasus belongs to the earlier stage of that experimental development sequence.
