Albatros D.III Fighter

The Albatros D.III was a German First World War fighter notable for its streamlined fuselage and sesquiplane wing arrangement. It became important during 1917, including the period known as Bloody April. Structural weaknesses in the lower-wing arrangement affected its reputation, while Austrian-built versions developed their own characteristics that separated them from German-built aircraft.

Designed around a plywood-covered fuselage, the fighter combined relatively clean aerodynamics with two synchronized machine guns. Its V-shaped interplane struts reflected influence from French Nieuport sesquiplanes. Lower-wing failures required restrictions and modifications, revealing the risks of an otherwise successful arrangement. Pilots including Manfred von Richthofen flew the type during its period of front-line prominence. Oeffag-built Austrian versions used different engines and structural refinements. The later Albatros D.V continued the family but did not completely resolve its underlying structural concerns.
