India Visakhapatnam-Class Destroyer
The Indian Visakhapatnam class, Project 15B, developed the navy’s modern guided-missile destroyer capability from the preceding Kolkata-class program. The ships combine air-defense, surface-warfare, and anti-submarine functions within a fleet-escort role. Their design reflects India’s increasing domestic naval-construction capacity alongside internationally sourced technology. Visakhapatnam and her sisters were built in India by Mazagon Dock. Their weapons include the BrahMos anti-ship missile and long-range air-defense equipment, while helicopters support anti-submarine work. The program reflects India’s continuing effort to combine domestic shipbuilding with systems obtained through international cooperation. The four ships were named Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal, and Surat, continuing the Indian Navy’s practice of naming destroyers after cities.
