Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Heavy Bomber
The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley was one of Britain’s principal heavy bombers at the beginning of the Second World War. Its angular shape and characteristic flying attitude made it distinctive. As newer bombers replaced it in the main offensive, Whitleys performed maritime patrol, training, and airborne-support tasks. Its history illustrates the rapid wartime obsolescence of designs conceived during the 1930s, while also showing that an older bomber could remain useful outside its original frontline role. Its distinctive nose-down flying attitude resulted from its wing and fuselage arrangement. Whitleys carried out early bombing, leaflet, and airborne-support missions before newer heavy bombers replaced them in front-line bombing. Later tasks included training and maritime work, extending usefulness beyond the initial strategic role.
