Douglas TBD Devastator

The Douglas TBD Devastator was an American carrier torpedo bomber that represented a major advance when introduced in the 1930s, with features such as a monoplane layout and folding wings. By 1942 it was increasingly vulnerable to modern fighters and defenses. Its torpedo squadrons suffered devastating losses at Midway, affected by tactical circumstances and unreliable weapons as well as aircraft limitations. It was replaced by newer types, particularly the TBF Avenger, rather than remaining the Navy’s principal torpedo aircraft throughout the war. Torpedo attacks depended on weapon reliability and a vulnerable approach profile. The catastrophic losses atMidway cannot be explained solely by comparing maximum speed with that of a newer aircraft.
