Australian ANZAC-class Frigate
The Anzac-class frigates were developed for Australia and New Zealand from the German MEKO design approach. They entered service during the post-Cold War period and supported a range of naval patrol, escort, and deployment duties. Repeated sensor, weapons, and air-defense upgrades changed their capabilities substantially over their careers, producing different configurations in the two national fleets.
Construction at Williamstown supported regional shipbuilding capability, with two ships serving New Zealand and eight originally entering Australian service. The design’s modular ancestry allowed equipment choices to evolve during construction and modernization. Australian upgrades notably strengthened radar and missile-defense capabilities, while New Zealand pursued its own modernization package. Ships have deployed for maritime security, coalition operations, disaster relief, and presence missions. Their shared basic design therefore coexists with important national differences in sensors, weapons, and operational history.
