British Astute-class Attack Submarine

The Astute class is a British nuclear-powered attack-submarine design developed to replace earlier Royal Navy attack boats. Its missions include hunting submarines and surface ships, gathering intelligence, and delivering conventional land-attack missiles. Nuclear propulsion supports long endurance, but it is not a ballistic-missile submarine carrying Britain’s strategic deterrent. The class entered service in the twenty-first century after a difficult development and construction process, bringing new sonar, weapons, and accommodation arrangements compared with preceding designs. Its conventional weapons role separates the term nuclear-powered from nuclear-armed. Confusing those expressions would give an attack submarine a strategic mission it was not designed to perform.
