Japan Yushio-class Submarine
Japan’s Yūshio-class submarines were conventionally powered boats developed during the Cold War for the Maritime Self-Defense Force. They formed part of a national emphasis on undersea surveillance and the protection of important sea approaches. The class followed earlier Japanese postwar submarine designs and preceded later improvements in hull and system arrangements. They followed the Uzushio design and retained the teardrop-hull approach associated with improved underwater performance. Japanese submarines emphasized surveillance and defense of surrounding sea routes. Later Harushio and Oyashio classes continued development rather than representing the same boat with only a new name. The boats supported Japan’s maritime defense during the Cold War.
