Description
Churchill Black Prince
Black Prince was a British heavy infantry-tank prototype developed from the Churchill concept. A wider hull and enlarged arrangements were needed to accommodate the powerful 17-pounder gun. The resulting vehicle retained the slow, heavily protected character of the infantry-tank tradition, but changing requirements and the emergence of more versatile tanks overtook the program. It did not enter operational production or fight in the Second World War, despite being a genuine constructed prototype rather than a purely fictional design. A widened Churchill-derived hull accommodated the larger turret and 17-pounder gun, but the result retained modest speed and substantial weight. By the time prototypes appeared, more promising British tank designs were advancing. Black Prince consequently remained a development experiment rather than the new standard infantry tank its designers had sought.
