Description
U.S.S. California 1941 Battleship
USS California was a Tennessee-class battleship in the American Pacific Fleet in 1941. Japanese aircraft attacked her at Pearl Harbor, and she sank in the harbor before salvage and reconstruction returned her to service. The rebuilt ship looked substantially different and later supported Pacific operations. A 1941 depiction therefore represents the pre-reconstruction configuration, not the extensive changes in protection, superstructure, and anti-aircraft armament visible in her later wartime form. She sank in shallow water after the Japanese attack but was raised and extensively rebuilt. Later service included amphibious bombardment and the Battle of Surigao Strait. Her reconstruction changed her superstructure and anti-aircraft arrangements substantially from the appearance she carried in December 1941.
