Churchill Flail "Toad"
The Churchill Flail, known as Toad, was a postwar mine-clearing adaptation of the Churchill chassis. Rotating chains were intended to strike the ground ahead of the vehicle and detonate mines before the main tracks reached them. The design continued wartime interest in protected mechanical mine clearance but did not become a major combat vehicle. It is distinct from the Sherman Crab of the Second World War and from other Churchill engineer configurations such as fascine carriers or AVRE assault tanks. The later FV3902 Toad used a Churchill chassis with mechanical flails to clear minefields. A separate Meteor engine powered the flail mechanism, housed in a prominent armored enclosure. This extra machinery made the vehicle considerably more specialized than a turretless Churchill with simple engineering fittings.
