Daphne-class Submarine
The French Daphné class was a postwar diesel-electric submarine design intended for patrol and attack tasks. It served with the French Navy and was exported to several other countries, where individual boats had their own careers and modifications. Compact conventional submarines could be useful in regional waters without the scale and cost of nuclear propulsion. Export customers included Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and Pakistan. Small size and conventional propulsion suited patrol missions, but two French boats, Minerve and Eurydice, were lost in accidents. Those losses form a somber part of the class history alongside its international service. Their service connected French shipbuilding with several distant naval theaters.
