MQ-28 Drone

The Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat originated in Australia’s effort to develop an uncrewed aircraft able to operate alongside crewed combat aircraft. The demonstrator first flew in 2021, exploring autonomy, mission flexibility, and cooperative operations. Its jet-powered configuration differs from the long-endurance propeller-driven drones associated with earlier surveillance and counterinsurgency missions. The program’s development history should be distinguished from unverified claims about particular combat deployments or fully mature operational capabilities. The program emphasizes cooperation between crewed aircraft and unmanned systems rather than simply replacing an entire fighter force. A modular mission approach allows different equipment to be considered. Its development represents Australia’s investment in domestic aerospace capability and emerging autonomous aviation, with demonstrated trials distinguished from assumptions about eventual combat employment.
