Description
Douglas A-1 Skyraider
The Douglas A-1 Skyraider was a large single-engine piston attack aircraft developed during the Second World War but introduced afterward. Its heavy payload and endurance made it useful in Korea and Vietnam, including close support and rescue-related missions. Its long career illustrates why a propeller-driven aircraft could remain valuable after jet aircraft had become standard in other roles.
The original naval designation AD changed to A-1 when American aircraft designations were standardized in 1962. A powerful radial engine, large wing, and numerous external stations allowed substantial ordnance and long time over a target. Navy and Marine squadrons used it in Korea, and American and South Vietnamese forces later employed it extensively in Vietnam. Air Force rescue-support missions became particularly associated with the type, using its endurance to protect helicopters and isolated aircrew under fire.
