Description
Northrop YB-35 Heavy Bomber
Northrop’s YB-35 was an American experimental heavy bomber using a flying-wing configuration and piston engines driving pusher propellers. The design sought aerodynamic efficiency and long range without a conventional fuselage and tail. Testing and development continued after the Second World War, but it did not enter operational bomber service. The prototype first flew in 1946, after the war that had driven its original requirement. Propulsion and control challenges accompanied the unconventional configuration. The later YB-49 used jet engines, but neither design entered operational bomber service; their historical significance lies in flying-wing experimentation. The flying-wing layout sought aerodynamic efficiency by reducing the separate fuselage and tail surfaces of conventional heavy bombers.
