Dutch De Ruyter-class Light Cruiser
HNLMS De Ruyter was a Dutch light cruiser commissioned in the 1930s for service connected with the Netherlands East Indies. Her design reflected financial and treaty-era constraints rather than the firepower of a heavy cruiser. She served as Admiral Karel Doorman’s flagship during the Battle of the Java Sea in February 1942 and was sunk by Japanese torpedoes. She differed from the different postwar De Ruyter class. The JavaSea action exposed failures of coordination and communications as well as Japanese tactical strength. DeRuyter’s loss formed part of the wider collapse of Allied naval defense in the region. The ship was commanded by Karel Doorman at the battle of the Java Sea.
