Essex-class Carrier with Angled Deck
Many Essex-class carriers were modernized after the Second World War to operate increasingly demanding aircraft. Angled flight decks, improved launching and landing arrangements, and other changes supported the transition to naval jets. Modernization programs differed, so no single rebuilt configuration describes every ship. An angled landing area separated recovering aircraft from aircraft parked forward, improving deck operations. Essex-class conversions combined this change with other modernization measures, allowing selected wartime hulls to operate jet aircraft during the Cold War. The SCB-125 program introduced the angled deck and enclosed hurricane bow to selected ships, reshaping their appearance. Those changes complemented earlier strengthening and aviation improvements. An aircraft missing the arresting wires could continue forward more safely along the angled landing path.
