Description
S.S. Manhattan class Oiler
SS Manhattan was an American merchant tanker modified for experimental Arctic navigation. In 1969 she made a heavily publicized voyage through the Northwest Passage to investigate whether large tankers could transport Alaskan oil by that route. Strengthening the hull and fitting an icebreaking bow transformed a commercial vessel into a specialized test platform. A further trial followed in 1970. These expeditions explored the practical difficulties of sea ice, navigation, and commercial oil transport in northern waters. They did not establish a commissioned naval replenishment class. Manhattan’s historical significance lies in the relationship between shipping technology, Arctic geography, and the search for a viable route from new oil resources to markets.
