Flak Tower-Small

German flak towers were substantial concrete air-defense and shelter installations built during the Second World War in selected cities. The full systems combined gun platforms with command and control functions, and designs varied.

The complexes generally paired a large gun tower with a separate fire-control tower, allowing observation and targeting equipment to operate away from the heaviest gunfire. Berlin, Hamburg, and Vienna received prominent examples. The concrete structures also sheltered civilians and protected other valuable contents during air raids. Their massive construction often made postwar demolition difficult, and several surviving towers have been adapted to new uses. A smaller control tower belonged to this coordinated defensive system rather than functioning as an isolated battery.
