Power Station
Power stations became critical infrastructure as electricity spread through industry, cities, communications, and military support systems. Coal-fired steam plants dominated much early large-scale generation, while hydroelectric and later nuclear installations developed different requirements and vulnerabilities. The First and Second World Wars showed how production, repair, lighting, transport, and communications could depend on a reliable power supply. Reliable electricity linked energy production with national industrial capacity, supporting factories, communications systems, transport installations, and the workshops maintaining equipment for both civilian and military use. Different generations of generating stations used different fuels and machinery, from coal-fired steam plants and hydroelectric schemes to later oil, gas, and nuclear installations. Hydroelectric construction also linked electrical generation to dams, water management, and regional development.
