French D. 510 Fighter
The Dewoitine D.510 was a French monoplane fighter of the interwar period. It combined an all-metal structure and a cannon firing through the propeller hub with features soon overtaken by newer designs, including an open cockpit and fixed undercarriage. Examples served in France and abroad, notably in China. The type represents a transitional fighter generation before retractable-undercarriage monoplanes became the dominant standard. The fixed undercarriage and open cockpit coexisted with the streamlined all-metal monoplane configuration. Cannon armament through the propeller hub distinguished the design from many earlier fighters. Its introduction came during a period when air forces were rapidly replacing biplanes, but improved retractable-undercarriage aircraft soon overtook this intermediate generation.
