Description
Siamese HTMS Thonburi Coastal Defense Ship
HTMS Thonburi was a Japanese-built coastal-defense ship serving the Royal Thai Navy. Its heavy guns were concentrated in a small hull suited to regional defense rather than oceanic battleship operations. The ship fought French naval forces at the Battle of Ko Chang in 1941 and suffered severe damage, linking its history to the Franco-Thai conflict. The clash at Ko Chang exposed the risks faced by a small regional navy against a stronger and better-coordinated force. Thonburi’s heavy guns did not remove the need for reconnaissance and effective tactical handling. Thonburi and her sister Sri Ayuthia carried 203 mm guns in twin turrets, unusually heavy armament for such small coastal-defense vessels.
