Description
Georges Leygues-class Frigate
France’s Georges Leygues class consisted of Cold War anti-submarine frigates associated with the F70 program. Helicopters, sonar, and supporting weapons allowed them to search for and threaten submarines beyond the ship’s immediate position. Their development reflected the importance of escorting valuable naval units in contested waters. The ships used a combination of diesel and gas-turbine propulsion suited to different operating demands. Their large helicopter facilities and towed-sonar arrangements reflected an anti-submarine emphasis. French naval terminology and international descriptions sometimes classified comparable ships differently, despite their similar escort purpose. Their equipment included a helicopter capability, extending the anti-submarine search beyond the ship’s own sonar and immediate weapons range.
