Upholder/Victoria-class Submarine

Britain’s Upholder-class submarines were modern conventional boats developed near the end of the Cold War. After a short period in Royal Navy service, the class was sold to Canada and renamed the Victoria class. Reactivation, modernization, and support created a complex later service history.

British boats were sold to Canada and renamed after refurbishment and adaptation. Their later Canadian careers included lengthy maintenance periods, illustrating the substantial engineering and training demands involved in transferring an existing submarine fleet.

Canada announced the purchase of four British boats in 1998, and Victoria commissioned in 2000. The acquisition preserved a Canadian submarine capability after the retirement of the older Oberon class, while demanding substantial changes in training and technical support.
