HMS Victorious CV Angled Deck

HMS Victorious began as an Illustrious-class armored carrier and served extensively during the Second World War. A major postwar reconstruction transformed it with an angled flight deck and equipment suited to jet aviation. That modernized appearance represents a different period from the wartime ship, even though both configurations belong to the same hull’s long history.

Victorious entered service in 1941 and took part in the pursuit of Bismarck soon afterward. Wartime operations included Mediterranean support, Arctic-related missions, and service with American forces in the Pacific. The extensive 1950s reconstruction added a steam catapult and new sensors as well as the angled deck. These changes enabled operation of a later generation of naval aircraft. The rebuilt ship returned to service in 1958, making its postwar silhouette and air group substantially different from those of the original armored carrier.
