Invincible-Class CV

Britain’s Invincible-class carriers were developed around helicopter and short-takeoff/vertical-landing aviation. The ski-jump flight deck became a defining feature, supporting Sea Harriers and later aircraft arrangements alongside anti-submarine helicopters. Invincible and her sister ships played major roles in British naval aviation during the late Cold War and afterward. The class is distinct from the First World War battlecruisers bearing the same name or with larger catapult-equipped fleet carriers.

The class combined a ski-jump flight deck with helicopters and Sea Harriers. Its development reflected British efforts to retain useful sea-based aviation after abandoning larger conventional carrier plans, and its ships became central to the 1982 Falklands campaign.
