Description
MS Schwabenland
Schwabenland was a German aviation-support ship associated with catapult-launched flying boats and long-distance air routes. It became especially known for supporting Germany’s 1938–39 Antarctic expedition, when aircraft surveyed and photographed large areas from the ship. During the Second World War it served in military aviation-support roles. Its aircraft facilities distinguished it from an ordinary merchant ship, but it should not be described as a conventional flight-deck aircraft carrier. Catapults allowed seaplanes to take off with useful loads when a water takeoff would have imposed restrictions. The ship’s aviation facilities reflected long-distance airline and reconnaissance requirements rather than a conventional carrier flight deck. Its Antarctic expedition service adds a distinctive scientific and political dimension to an otherwise commercially rooted aviation-support vessel.
