Description
Le Redoutable-Class SSBN
Le Redoutable was the name ship of France’s first nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarine class. The family established an independent sea-based component of the French nuclear deterrent during the Cold War. Establishing a national deterrent at sea required France to develop boats, missiles, nuclear propulsion, crews, and supporting shore facilities. The class therefore represents an industrial and institutional achievement as well as a group of individual submarines. Le Redoutable was launched in 1967 and entered service in 1971. The class carried sixteen ballistic missiles in a compartment behind the sail. Boats operated from the French strategic base at Île Longue, near Brest. Progressive missile improvements increased the force’s reach while the submarines maintained patrols as part of France’s independent nuclear strategy.
