AMX-30 Main Battle Tank

France’s AMX-30 was a Cold War main battle tank developed with emphasis on mobility and firepower rather than the heaviest possible armor. Its 105mm gun and automotive choices reflected the belief that modern anti-tank weapons reduced the value of adding ever more passive protection. It served with France and foreign customers and later received upgrades. It mounted a 105mm gun and entered service in the 1960s after Franco-German cooperation failed to produce one common tank. Export customers and specialized derivatives broadened the family. Later AMX-30B2 modernization improved fire control and mobility without changing the original design into a heavily armored contemporary main battle tank.
