M4 Sherman Deep Water
Sherman deep-wading equipment allowed tanks to negotiate water deeper than their normal unprepared limit during amphibious landings and crossings. Extended air-intake and exhaust arrangements were used with sealing and other preparations to protect the engine and systems. This configuration did not make the tank independently buoyant like a Duplex Drive Sherman. Its history belongs to the practical engineering of getting armor ashore and across obstacles, with crews removing or abandoning temporary fittings when their purpose had been served.
Getting armor through surf involved planning around landing craft, tides, beach gradients, and enemy fire. Crews had to prepare seals and vulnerable openings carefully: an extended intake could supply air, but it could not protect an inadequately waterproofed hull from flooding. Once ashore, the tank resumed its ordinary support role.
