M48 Patton Main Battle Tank

The American M48 Patton was a Cold War medium and later main battle tank developed beyond the M47. Its cast hull and turret, 90 mm gun in early versions, and extensive later modifications made it an important American and export design. M48s served in Vietnam and with many foreign armies, while later upgrades introduced different engines, fire-control systems, and sometimes larger guns. The Patton name covers more than one tank family. Early gasoline-powered vehicles and later diesel conversions had different operating and maintenance requirements, while national modernization programs further changed weapons, protection, and fire-control equipment over time. South Vietnam also operated M48s during the later stages of the Vietnam War.
