Republic F-84 Thunderjet

The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was an early American straight-wing jet fighter that became particularly important as a fighter-bomber during the Korean War. It carried bombs and rockets against ground targets while more capable air-superiority fighters took the leading role against opposing jets. The family underwent numerous improvements as early jet technology matured. It should be distinguished from the swept-wing F-84F Thunderstreak, a substantially changed design despite the closely related designation. Straight wings identified the early Thunderjet series before the distinct swept-wing Thunderstreak. Korea demonstrated the type’s importance in ground attack, while aerial refueling and nuclear delivery influenced later assignments. Export service also linked the aircraft to the rebuilding of allied air forces during the early Cold War.
