Mig-9 Fighter
The MiG-9 was one of the Soviet Union’s first jet fighters, developed immediately after the Second World War using early turbojet technology. Its introduction was brief compared with the much more successful swept-wing MiG-15 that followed.
The MiG-9 first flew in 1946, during the Soviet push to introduce jet propulsion rapidly after the war. Two engines derived from German BMW technology were housed within the fuselage. Gun installations near the intake created difficulties because firing could disturb engine operation. Although produced in useful numbers, the type was quickly surpassed by improved engines and swept-wing designs. Its short front-line prominence reflects the speed of early jet development rather than the absence of practical Soviet production experience.
