Description

U.S. Martin Maryland Medium Bomber

The Martin Maryland was an American-designed twin-engine bomber initially associated with French orders before the fall of France. Aircraft subsequently served with British and other Allied forces in reconnaissance and bombing work. The type became particularly useful in the Mediterranean, where long-range observation could be as important as carrying bombs. French service called the aircraft the Martin 167. After France’s defeat, examples reached Britain and were adapted to RAF requirements. Maryland reconnaissance from Malta helped maintain observation of Axis naval movements in the Mediterranean before more modern aircraft gradually replaced the type. Its overseas service made an American-built design part of several air forces’ wartime reconnaissance and bombing capabilities.
