Description
Polish WW2 Cavalry
Polish cavalry in 1939 consisted of modern mounted formations that used horses for mobility and normally fought dismounted. Their supporting equipment included machine guns, artillery, and anti-tank weapons, reflecting the requirements of contemporary warfare. Cavalry units participated in the defense of Poland against forces with major advantages in armor, aircraft, and logistics. The familiar story of cavalry deliberately charging tanks with sabers misrepresents both doctrine and the fighting. At Krojanty, a mounted attack struck German infantry before armored vehicles intervened. Horses still offered useful movement across poor roads, but they could not overcome the wider operational disadvantages facing Poland during the invasion and destruction of its defenses.
