Ram MK II Medium Tank

The Canadian Ram tank was developed using the American M3 medium-tank automotive foundation but with a different hull and turret arrangement. The Ram Mk II carried a 6-pounder gun. It did not become a principal frontline gun tank in northwest Europe; chassis were instead valuable for training and specialized conversions, notably the Kangaroo armored personnel carrier. The tank reflects Canada’s attempt to establish a useful armored manufacturing capability while adapting available technology and components. Changing Allied standardization and the availability of the Sherman affected its prospects as a gun tank. The later usefulness of converted Rams demonstrates that an unsuccessful frontline role did not erase the value of the hulls and industrial experience already created.
