RSD-10 Pioneer (SS-20) IRBM
The Soviet RSD-10 Pioneer, called SS-20 Saber by NATO, was a mobile intermediate-range ballistic missile system. Its deployment became a major issue in late Cold War European security, contributing to debates over NATO’s response and nuclear escalation. The 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty required elimination of the missile and other covered systems. Its history therefore concerns strategic deterrence and arms control, not a battlefield rocket launcher whose employment can be understood independently of nuclear policy.
Mobile launchers complicated an opponent’s efforts to locate and destroy the missiles before launch. NATO’s response and the resulting arms-control confrontation made the SS-20 a central issue in the European nuclear debate before treaty-mandated elimination.
