Description
Russia KV-5 Heavy Tank
The KV-5 was a Soviet heavy-tank design study produced in 1941, with an unusually large hull and heavily protected fighting arrangement. It was not completed as a service vehicle. The German invasion and urgent production requirements favored existing designs, so the KV-5 belongs to the history of unrealized Soviet heavy-tank development rather than battlefield deployment.
Developed at the Kirov works alongside other heavy-tank proposals, the design sought increased armor and a gun more powerful than that of existing KV vehicles. Drawings show a tall main turret and additional positions incorporated into the large hull. Such an ambitious machine would have demanded substantial material, manufacturing capacity, and automotive development. The immediate need to evacuate industry and maintain production after the invasion left little room for it. Surviving design material records intentions, not tested protection or mobility.
