Russian JS-4 Heavy Armor
The Soviet IS-4, also written JS-4 in older English usage, was a heavy tank developed during the later Second World War and introduced after the conflict. It emphasized substantial armor and a powerful gun but was produced only in limited numbers. Weight, cost, and changing armored doctrine constrained its future. Its origins were linked to the wartime Object 701 development program. The IS-4’s 122mm gun and substantial protection reflected heavy-tank priorities, but the resulting vehicle imposed major demands on roads, bridges, and maintenance. It was eventually overshadowed by more practical postwar armored-force developments. The IS designation honored Joseph Stalin, linking the tank to the wider Soviet heavy-tank lineage of the period.
