Description
Tu-22 Blinder
The Tupolev Tu-22, called Blinder by NATO, was an early Soviet supersonic bomber with a distinctive engine arrangement near the tail. It was intended to improve the performance of long-range aviation but proved demanding to operate. Reconnaissance, training, and electronic-warfare variants formed part of the family. It should not be confused with the later variable-sweep Tu-22M Backfire, a substantially different aircraft despite the related designation. Its supersonic design represented a substantial step beyond earlier subsonic Soviet bombers, but operational handling and maintenance were demanding. Specialized versions performed reconnaissance and electronic-warfare duties. The later Tu-22M was a markedly different aircraft rather than a minor modification, despite the confusing continuity of the numerical designation.
