Russian LaGG-3 Fighter
The LaGG-3 was a Soviet fighter developed around extensive use of wood in its structure. It entered service during the difficult early period of the German invasion and faced problems of weight, performance, and production quality. Despite those limitations it contributed to the Soviet air effort while more effective developments emerged.
Wooden construction reduced dependence on some strategic materials but did not eliminate the need for skilled production and consistent quality. Changes in weight and finish could affect an aircraft whose performance margins were already limited.
The initials recalled designers Lavochkin, Gorbunov, and Gudkov. Fitting a radial engine to the basic airframe helped produce the more successful La-5, giving the troubled earlier fighter an important place in the evolution of wartime Soviet aviation.
